Giving voice to the individuals and organisations who fight censorship and campaign for free speech around the world, last night saw the annual Index On Censorship Freedom of Expression Awards, supported by SAGE, take place. To mark this event, you can read the spring issue of Index On Censorship, for free up until the 17th of May.
Across the four award categories (Journalism, Digital Activism, Campaigning, and Arts), the outstanding achievements of activists from across the globe were once again brought to the fore. These included: a crusading news organisation battling corruption in the Maldives, a Chinese political cartoonist forced into exile, as well as a group tracking Turkey’s internet shutdowns, and a Russian prisoner and LGBT rights activist convicted under the country’s anti-protest law. Find out more about the winners here.
Academic freedom is a core mission central to SAGE’s publishing goals and we are delighted to continue to be both a sponsor of the Freedom of Expression Awards and publisher of the Index on Censorship Magazine.
