Can you imagine trying to study for a test without any notes, because you couldn’t afford pens or paper? Without essential school supplies such as backpacks, rulers, notebooks and pencils, a basic education may be out of reach for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Seeking to make a positive impact in the lives of some of these kids, we were thrilled to participate in the second run of Give Back with Backpacks, an onsite volunteer event. Last month, 115 SAGE employees from our LA office participated in the event by stuffing 1,000 brand new backpacks with school supplies for disadvantaged middle and high school students in the Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
After assembling the backpacks, SAGE employees delivered them to four local organizations including Casa Pacifica, Many Mansions, School on Wheels, and Transition House, where they were put into the hands of students excited –and ready- for the upcoming school year.
As an academic publisher, we’re committed to the belief that education leads to better lives and a thriving society. It was a pleasure to support the Give Back with Backpacks initiative, and we cannot wait to do so again next year.
Check back with SAGE Connection in the coming weeks, when we’ll share a few images of the kids receiving their new school supplies.
