The essays in this special anniversary issue celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th birthday stems for the most part from a congress of the European Shakespeare Research Association (ESRA) at the University of Montpellier from 26 to 29 June 2013, which gathered European scholars, but also colleagues from all over the world, around the theme of ‘Shakespeare and Myth’.
To mark the occasion, free access to the lead article The myth behind ‘The Shakespeare Myth’: Contemporary reports, 1592–1640 by Patrick Cheney has been made available. This article seeks to recover the original ‘Shakespeare Myth’ and presents it as myth of authorial fame.
