The invention of the World Wide Web had a remarkable effect on academic libraries. Today, libraries are no longer just repositories of books, research collections and other printed materials. They are now electronic gateways to ostensibly unlimited amounts of information. In addition, the Internet offers exciting opportunities to access information. Similarly, advancements in information and communication technologies (ICTs) have altered the way information is generated, stored and accessed, while the Internet and web-based technologies have facilitated the publication and dissemination of information in digital formats. This study intends to determine whether the technology satisfaction model (TSM) validly measures postgraduate students’ satisfaction of using online research databases in an academic library.
To measure the components of TSM and the concerns of prospective respondents, a survey was conducted. A total of 300 postgraduate students from six faculties of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) were invited to participate in the study through a stratified random sampling procedure. A total of 263 students responded to the survey. The findings suggest that to increase student satisfaction, service providers need to assure that databases are easy to use, and that their students have the required knowledge and skills to benefit from these databases.
Evidence from the TSM indicates that the direct and indirect impacts of the postgraduate students’ computer self-efficacy on satisfaction, perceived ease of use and usefulness of online research databases is limited to the extent of their requisite skills in downloading research materials from the online research databases, navigating their way through the databases, e-mailing journals or articles from the databases, and saving and printing articles from research databases. This study illustrates that the postgraduate students’ perceived usefulness and ease of use had a noteworthy impact on their satisfaction with online research databases. These predictors were directly associated with user satisfaction, and they played a vital role in assessing databases, As the postgraduate students’ satisfaction is determined by three valid facets of the TSM, some other components might also be included, such as computer anxiety and service quality of online the findings of this study to other settings. Therefore, it would be useful to conduct more research into online research databases in other universities using the TSM.
In today’s technology-enriched environment, online research databases have become an indispensable tool in learning and research activities. Libraries worldwide have incorporated them as an integral part of their current service delivery. This study intends to determine whether the technology satisfaction model (TSM) validly measures postgraduate students’ satisfaction of using online research databases in an academic library. It further explores the relationships among antecedents within the model. To measure the components of the TSM, the stratified random sampling strategy was used to conduct a survey with 300 postgraduate students from six faculties of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) in Pakistan. The data were statistically analysed using the Rasch model and structural equation modelling (SEM). The results of the study illustrate direct and indirect associations among the exogenous, endogenous and mediating variables of the TSM, with the studied postgraduate students’ computer self-efficacy playing a crucial role in influencing their satisfaction. The TSM shows that 69% of the variance in the postgraduate students’ satisfaction can be explained by perceived usefulness, computer self-efficacy and perceived ease of use, which confirm that the TSM has a strong predictive power and is viable for measuring endogenous variable. The findings also make a significant contribution to the testing of databases for academics, service providers and researchers in higher education.
