In the seven decades since Kanner first published his original reports on individuals with autism, there have been many thousands of publications on the topic. However, one area remains woefully under researched—life for adults with autism. It was with the aim of addressing the limited amount of published research on adults, and in the hope of identifying studies that could give further insight into how to promote positive outcomes, that this special issue was planned devoted to life in adulthood. There is a wish to see more of a balanced view of how to support adults in areas where they struggle, while also promoting areas of strength.
